Not just British motorsports enthisiasts, buy racing fans from around the world were astonished when Volvo entered the 1994 British Touring Car Championships (BTCC) wiht their 850 Estate station wagon. In preparation for this challenging event, Volvo combined forces with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) Group. TWR's racing expertise turned this 850 utility wagon into a highly competitive racing maching. It's 1984cc in-line 5 cylinder DOHC engine was tuned up to yield 280 plus brake horsepower. The X-Track developed, 6 speed sequential gearbox was coupled to transfer this power effectively to the front wheels. Suspension geometry was thorougly revised to obtain optimum handling on the track. Stopping power was augmented by using larger diameter brake discs all around, and 8 pod calipers at the front. Environmental protection has always been a Volvo concern and their racing machines are no exception. The 850 Estate was the first racing car in the BTCC history to use exhaust gas catalyst. Drivers Lammers and Rydell worked hard to tame this unique racing machine, and earned a respectable 5th place twice during the racing season. Although it did not record a victory, Volvo's enterprising attemp was certainly the focus of attention during the entire 1994 racing scene. They demonstrated that their station wagon was equal in performance to sedans, even on racing circuits.
